AI, Slime Mold and Painting

This project was called "Forced Connections" and its aim was to connect topics in art and science that we drew "randomly" from a pile of concepts, techniques, topics and methods. I drew Machine Learning, Microbiology, and Painting.

After lots of brainstorming, I decided that I would use AI (and its inherent methods of machine learning) and prompt it to "paint" microbiology. After various prompts and iterations, I would then take inspiration from AI's paintings of microbiology and combine it with my own learning experiences of microbiology and make a painting.

I then thought about the experiences I had in the Grow Lab, and the visual cues that stood out to me... the clean materials, microscope slides, repetition of circles, and mesmerizing slime mold we had been learning from and experimenting with.

From these recollections and reflections I started painting on paper, and then translated those paper drafts onto perspex and layered the piece to represent the different magnifications one can look at the world from.
