The standalone floating portrait of an old face dissolving pushes the idea of lost memory chipping away at identity. Keeping the subject of a face, I explored engraving as a new technique for line-making. In context of my practice, this piece is a loose end that I plan on revisiting. Transparency is reminiscent of MRI scans, a connection to neuroimaging I’d like to explore, and the ethereal yet detailed quality of engraving on frosted perspex lends itself to my abstract ambiguous yet information dense style.
Floating Fragmented Portraits (layered piece). Engraved with a Dremel tool and left as loose and moveable layers. These emphasize philosophical notions of malleability of identity while marking my furthest deviation from painting and neuroscience. They also reinforce the recurring concept of memory being esential to human identity and how its fragility has a direct relationship with our sense of self. How many memories can be lost or changed until we are no longer ourselves? Refer to the ‘Ship of Theseus’ for philosophical background.
